Forum: GratefulDead Subject: I'll Explain

So I have thrown some mud at people without explaination. It is also something I very rarely do unless someone is being unreasonable or unjustified in my mind. I broke one of my own rules I have for myself by slamming someone recently.

A little background first. I have for the last 4 years been writing as a reporter for two different well established sport sites that are much like this except of course its about sports and is operated with admins and monitors. On these sites which are well established and respected we have a few professional insiders there like coaches, trainers or scouts writing. Basically its not a joke site and not anything like you would see on Sportsline.com or ESPN.com where people just call each other names.

On these sites there are three things we never do. One attack someone because we don't like what they are saying. The only time we go on the affrontive is when someone is babbling sports without facts. Example: John Elway is the greatest QB ever(stop). Making the statement is great but without adding reasons as the why leaves yourself open to someone directly asking you why. As long as you do back yourself up people generally read it and agree or debate using facts or just plain move on. We never go on the offensive because people are making fun of something or being silly. We never moralize or cast stones and we never bash just to bash. You bash unnecessarily and your'e out of there.

Secondly almost the most important thing, is we never post the following thread. A "threaten to leave the site" because we are upset at the moment thread or because we think someone is being a jerk. We leave or we stay its that simple. We never post threads claiming or insinuating we are leaving. We most certainly do not make the statement or imply "I'm leaving" and show up the next day like it never happened. Think about this. I post a "I am leaving" or imply "I am leaving" thread and then everyone back peddles makes a scene and begs "please don't go" or "stay". What in the hell is that? If you don't like it just be mature and just go quietly if thats what you want to do or stay and ignore the things you don't like. No need to threaten or be melodramatic and get everyone all riled up. We are adults right? Do we need reassurance everyday or are we mature enough to take the good and bad without being Jr. High about it.

Third and another big thing is we never post "so and so site is better". Again read above if you don't like it just stay where you are happy and stop bashing the site that you are unhappy on. Why is it so popular around here to tell everyone its so much better at deadhook? Passing infomation like dancingbears does about shows or downloads is one thing and theres nothing wrong with that but to promote it as being better is obnoxious and inappropiate on Archives. No reason to say the "people are better" over there then here. It's offensive to the people who don't go there or post there.

By no means am I saying these are rules or anything like that but to me its commonsense and exhibiting maturity on blogs. Call me whatever you want or think I am being an a-hole but I think what I am saying is right to the point of some of my observations on here. This site provides some awesome infomation about shows I have never heard or might not have if i didn't read the stuff on here. It also gives some great humor, perspective and insight on things I never thought about. At the same time I find also unbelivable that a bunch of sport dorks, geeks and jocks act better than us open minded heads do. Anyhow, take what you want its just my 2 pennies and nothing more.

John Elway is the greatest QB ever. To get to a Super Bowl is great, but to get to 3 of them with the lack of talent he had on those teams. Can you even name one other guy from those losing Super Bowl teams?

Ha...I hope. Can never be sure about jokes here; I just don't know how to do this (e stuff) yet...learning, but slow. Hmmm--maybe you are serious (not a bad thing, necessarily, I just don't know).

Not really serious.

And...if you read my posts (which I know you do) I am rarely as serious as a lot of people around here. I just find the information more than I can even look up and act upon.

So, no, I was not actually implicating anyone, I just thought it was funny that five of you guys were doing exactly what it was you were talking about. That is, having a conversation back and forth.

For the record: I don't mind the conversations, I just don't read them.

Keep on keepin on

There are points in your post I do agree with, however, at times the tone does tend towards the judgemental. If not your intent, I'll apologize now, but, regardless, many reading it may interpret it as a rather wide condemnation of many posters here. Are many of us a little too emotional? Sure. Are many or our posts not of the best intent? Yup. Do some of us at times go on the attack? No doubt about it. But for me at least, I take the entire forum as a true reflection of what I encountered in parking lots around the country. There is a myriad group of personalities here, all distinct, just as there were in the gatherings of yesteryear. I do not expect to agree with everyone everytime, but I will agree with you here, I do expect everyone to respect oneanother as I try to respect everyone, regardless of their position/opinion. I will only come out in anger when I see someone attacking someone else on a personal level, otherwise it's live and let live, and if you don't like it, there are many other sites to visit. If someone wants to say that they think another site is better, let them, that's their opinion. I will not tell anyone what they can or cannot post here, whether I choose to read it and give it creedence is just that: my choice. However, I will say that I hope posters here will show respect and courtesy to one another and refrain from personal attacks (unless, of course, that the participating parties are familiar with one another and realize that the exchange is not a serious one). As for "backtracking", I will admit that on one occasion recently I did this very thing. I saw a particular subject begin to get rather ugly and realized that my postings on the matter may have been seen as attacking someone and this caused me to delete much of what I had said. Do I regret it now? Yes, I should have had greater faith in the participants here to understand that nothing I had said was aimed at a specific person. I have learned from this and will not make the same mistake twice. Along the same lines, if someone threatens to leave this forum for any reason, I will express regret, but I won't retract anything or change my opinions in order to get them to stay. Someone wants to leave, let them.
That's my take on the subject, agree or disagree, it's just my opinion, take it for what it's worth.

Damn it - this one just doesn't go away does it? We've been spending an awful lot of time lately going around and around on the issue of who we are, how we talk to each other, our attitudes to each other, what's acceptable behaviour and what isn't. It's obviously something that strikes a nerve with a number of us, and I suspect it will never be resolved.

Surely the forum is just like life in microcosm, some folks you rub along well with, others irk you, others you hardly ever notice. You wouldn't expect everyone in life to please you and you can't expect it here. We'll just have to put up with being amused, bewildered, bored, enlightened and enraged. Sometimes all in the same day.

As Ed McMahon would too often say: You are correct, sir. I will do my utmost to make sure that this was my last take on the subject. If, however, I stray from that pledge, I will trust you to bring it my attention and, if you feel the need, chide me for being a backtracking, spineless, repetitive, unoriginal, dead horse beating, single-malt swilling, "street cats making love" ridiculing asshole. What else are friends for?

Man - you know how it goes. We'll hold our water for a week or two and then somebody will make some comment about so and so being nasty and offensive to so and so and we'll climb right back up on our high horses and start shooting spit and bullets all over again. So see you on the trail, compadre. I'll bring the whisky.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mere observations and nothing more. Yes, to a degree it is judgmental but almost everything we write has judgments in them. Its just not in the fashion of "I condemn you" tone nor is it a site wide condemnation.

I agree with what you are driving at also but I find those three things to be the "unwritten rules" of blogs or glogs and I see alot of it from the same people(not everybody). I am sorry but I am finding it annoying and felt the need to say something. Is my opinion wrong....maybe thats up for everyone else to decide. I can't stop nor do I want to keep anyone from saying what they want. The only thing I want is for people to think before they write or imply another " I am leaving thread". I dont care for the other site is better nonsense at all. Theres no need for that, if we are jackasses and jerkoffs then so be it..... leave politely and dont tell me the other people are cooler. Besides I already know the other people are cooler its been said enough on here. ;)

Interesting and articulate post there, Ssag. Just one thing that bothers me, sets my antennae twitching, and that is that it just doesn't seem like a Ssag post to me. The tone, the voice, if you will, just isn't the same as on previous posts. I had thought you were a sailor - how do you sports report from the deck of a boat? Understand that I'm just curious here. I'm actually in agreement with a fair bit of what you say.

No its me and its just me writing from a perspective were I would normally write on the others sites. Not where I am not thinking as I am writing which is how I normally do here. I do not get paid to write what I do on those sports sites and most certainly didn't mean to imply it if thats what you thought. Mostly hack journalism but I wanted to say was I have much experience on similiar sites and I am accostumed to them. Thats what I was driving at. Sorry for the misunderstandind if there was one.

Ships are pretty modern now and we have email capability but just not internet per say. It is but different and difficult to explain but I could write you all day if I wanted. I can even use the telephone in my "foc'sle" in the middle of the ocean and call home. Its a brave new world out there.

I hope there wasn't any misunderstanding, Ssag. My guess is that you took the time to speak out on something you felt deeply about rather than just throwing out a typical off-the-cuff forum response.

I realise ships are pretty well equipped and don't rely too much on flags and semaphore these days - more wondering how you got to see many games.

Well I have a lot of time off as you might know. I pay for the packages on TV, go to games when I can and of course when I am on the beach. Ive been known to wake up and fly to wherever the B's are playing that day and go to the game. And when I am not here in the USA they just do w/o me. Last year I was gone 10 months and didn't write much at all. It comes and goes according to my job but I keep up with it as much as I can through reading what I can. This year I have been home since June so I have seen every Bruin game. Trust me its all hack stuff nothing to be taken all that seriously.

"Wuthering Heights" in semaphore is one of the few cases where the semaphore version outdoes the original.
